Frequently Asked Questions

How does billing work?
Subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. You can cancel anytime from the Billing page. Your credits remain available until the end of the billing period.
What happens when I run out of credits?
When your credits run out, Beaver will prompt you to purchase a credit pack or upgrade your plan. You can always use your own API key for unlimited usage without credits.
Do credits roll over?
Yes. Unused subscription credits roll over to the next billing period (up to one month's worth). For example, if you have a Plus plan (100 credits/month) and only use 60 credits in the first month, the remaining 40 roll over. At the start of the next period you'll have 100 fresh credits + 40 rolled-over credits = 140 total for the month.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time from the Account page. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period (no partial refunds). No further charges will be made.
What are purchased credit packs?
Credit packs are one-time purchases of 50 additional credits for $8. They expire one year from purchase as long as your account is active. If you also have a subscription, extra credits from credit packs are only used after your subscription and rolled-over credits.
Can I use my own API key?
Yes. You can bring your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, etc.) for unlimited usage without credits.
What model does Beaver use?
When you select "Beaver" as your model, you get a curated system that may combine multiple models behind the scenes. We tune prompts, configure automatic fallback, and optimize for research tasks. Some tasks like external search or batch extraction use specialized models suited to those workflows. The underlying models may change over time as we improve performance. Currently, one of the main drivers is Kimi K2.5.
Can I use Plus Tools with my own API key?
Yes. For a small amount of credits, you can enable Plus Tools with your own API key. This allows you search over 240 million scholarly works outside your Zotero library, process multiple PDFs at once to extract structured data, and use AI models to improve the relevance of all search results.

Legacy plan: Beta for cloud-based processing

Many users still have access to this legacy plan previously described as beta/pro. It includes access to an early version of cloud-based processing without Beaver credits. As all other users, they can use their own API key for unlimited usage or purchase Beaver credits. Users will continue to have access to these features until full cloud-based processing features are released.
